The A45 between Wellingborough and Northampton is the local artery and behaves like one. Westbound it fills from around half past seven and eastbound from four in the afternoon, with the Chowns Mill junction near Higham Ferrers historically the pinch point at the eastern end. For airport departures we either leave before the build or take the A509 north to Kettering and pick up the A14 instead, which is longer on paper and frequently shorter in practice.

At the station the difficulty is the car park rather than the trains. It fills well before eight on a weekday, and the drop-off lane backs onto Midland Road at exactly the wrong moment, so we collect and set down at an agreed point on the approach. Coming the other way, evening arrivals from St Pancras land into a queue of waiting cars, and a chauffeur already in position rather than circling makes a noticeable difference after a long day.

Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
