Junction 29 is the one that matters, sitting on the A617 about ten minutes from the town centre, with 29A a little further south serving Markham Vale and the Bolsover side. The northbound carriageway builds from around seven in the morning as the Sheffield commute joins, and the southbound run towards Nottingham slows through the late afternoon. For a flight out of East Midlands we would usually leave ahead of that, or accept a slightly longer run down the A61 and the A38 instead.

West of the town the character changes within a mile. The A619 to Baslow and the A632 towards Matlock rise onto exposed ground that holds ice long after the valley roads have cleared, and the Rother valley catches fog on still autumn mornings. Event traffic for Chatsworth through the summer, and for the Christmas market in the town centre, both fill the western approaches for days at a time, so we agree a departure that reflects the day rather than the distance.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
