Westminster is government, ceremony and business inside a very small area — Whitehall, Parliament Square, the Abbey, Victoria Street and the newer offices around Victoria station. It is residential in pockets too, particularly around Smith Square and the streets behind Horseferry Road. There is also a steady flow of visitors doing the obvious and worthwhile things: the Abbey, the war rooms, a walk along the Embankment at dusk. Both patterns suit a car held on standby, since neither ends exactly when the diary said it would.

Heathrow from Westminster typically takes 50 to 80 minutes, west along the Embankment or through Belgravia to the A4. Gatwick is usually 55 to 90 minutes and often the easier run, since Vauxhall Bridge puts you on the southbound roads within minutes. London City is 35 to 60 minutes east along the Embankment. St Pancras for the Eurostar is fifteen to thirty minutes north, which makes Westminster a comfortable base for a continental departure.
