The A38 through Derby has been the subject of long-running junction work around Markeaton, Kingsway and Little Eaton, and while the layout keeps changing the effect does not: the northbound run between four and six in the afternoon is the slowest part of the local week. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
