Trains from Paddington are fast, but they deliver you to the bottom of a very steep city with your luggage, and Bath is not a place for dragging cases uphill in good clothes. A car takes you to the hotel door instead, whether that door is on the Royal Crescent, halfway up Lansdown or tucked down a lane in Bathwick. The weekend starts when you close the car door in London.
The M4 runs west past Heathrow, Reading and Swindon with only the Reading stretch causing real difficulty. We leave the motorway at Junction 18 and drop down through Bathford and Batheaston, which is the prettiest of the approaches and brings you into the city beside the river. In heavy weather the alternative through Chippenham on the A4 is occasionally the quicker option.
Three hours each way is long enough that comfort stops being an abstract idea and starts mattering in the seat. Guests heading for a spa weekend generally want to begin relaxing well before they arrive, and guests heading to a wedding want to arrive without creases. Both are considerably easier in a car you are not driving, with the boot doing all of the work.
Weekend bookings to Bath usually work best as a Friday out and a Sunday back, with the same chauffeur on both legs wherever we can arrange it. Some guests keep the car for the Saturday to take in Castle Combe, Lacock or Stonehenge. Stops on the way down are easy to build in — Marlborough is a good one — provided you tell us in advance.

The M4 west, and the hill
Westbound, the M4 is a road of three moods. It is busy but predictable as far as Slough, genuinely slow through the Reading junctions at almost any hour resembling a peak, then long, open and quick from the Newbury turn-off through to Swindon. Junction 18 is the usual exit, dropping through Bathford and Batheaston beside the river, though when the descent is queuing the A4 through Chippenham occasionally proves the faster answer.
On a three-hour run we suggest one stop, and Marlborough or Hungerford off the A4 are considerably better than the service areas either side of them. Tell us the hotel name and street, whether there is a wedding arrival window to hit, and how many cases are coming, because Bath's lanes and residents' bays reward a vehicle chosen deliberately. Friday makes every estimate looser, so we quote ranges and mean them.
Paddington to Bath Spa is fast and we would never argue otherwise on paper. What decides it in practice is the final quarter mile. The station sits at the bottom of a steep city, most hotels do not, and the rank there on a Friday evening is a queue rather than a formality. Add crossing London to Paddington with a weekend's luggage and the car quietly recovers the time it appeared to lose.

The weekend properly begins when the boot closes in London. Timing & Availability
Fridays, Sundays and season
Friday westbound is the slowest departure of the week and the Reading section is why. Leaving before eleven or after seven makes a noticeable difference, and where a dinner reservation is involved we would far rather set off early than arrive apologetic. Sunday returns are generally kind until the late afternoon, when everyone who left on Friday decides to come home at once.
Summer Saturdays, the Christmas market weeks and the days around bank holidays are the busiest of the Bath year, and the larger vehicles go first. Six to eight weeks is comfortable notice for a wedding, while a midweek spa trip can frequently be arranged at very short notice.
