Junction 28 on the A38 is the workhorse, and the delay sits there rather than on the motorway. Traffic from Sutton-in-Ashfield and the Kings Mill side converges at the same roundabouts, and the westbound run slows from mid-afternoon onwards. Junction 29 further north by the A617 is often quicker for anything heading south in the evening, so we look at both before an airport departure rather than defaulting to the shorter distance on the map.

North and east the roads turn rural very quickly. The A6075 to Edwinstowe and the lanes through Clumber and the Dukeries are unlit, narrow in places and busy with visitors on summer Sundays, while frost lingers on the higher ground around Warsop well into a winter morning. Event days at the forest visitor centre and shoot days on the estates both add traffic that no route planner anticipates, so anything starting out there before eight gets a margin.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
