A tour is planned as a sequence rather than a set of transfers. We look at where you are sleeping each night, how far the next place actually is on real roads, and how much of the day you want to spend moving. The honest answer is usually less than people first plan, and we will say so. Three considered stops beat six rushed ones on every itinerary we have ever driven.
Well-worn shapes include the Cotswolds and Oxford over three days, a Scottish run from Edinburgh into the Highlands, the cathedral cities, the Lake District, and a west-country loop taking in Bath and the coast. We can build one from scratch or drive an itinerary your travel designer has already written, working to their plan rather than rewriting it.
For country roads, single-track lanes and winter weather, a Range Rover or a Defender is the sensible vehicle, and the higher seating position genuinely improves the view over hedgerows. Where the route stays on main roads a saloon is quieter and more comfortable. We will recommend based on the roads you will actually be on.
Chauffeur accommodation on overnight tours is arranged separately and quoted transparently, so there is no hidden line to discover afterwards. Driving-hours rules apply on consecutive days and we build genuinely restful evenings into the plan rather than pretending they are optional. How a multi-day tour is costed
Touring is quoted as a day rate per vehicle for each day of the trip, including the days the car mostly waits, plus mileage where the distances are substantial. The chauffeur's accommodation and meals on overnight tours are itemised, and so is the positioning at either end if the tour begins or finishes a long way from where the car is based. All of it appears in one written figure before anything is held.
Itineraries written from a map underestimate Britain badly. The distance from Edinburgh to Skye looks like an afternoon and is not, and the roads that make the Highlands worth seeing are the ones that take twice as long. Two other things catch people out: many country houses, castles and gardens close from November to March or open only on certain days, and the popular ones now require tickets booked ahead, which you arrange rather than us.
A touring day settles into a rhythm within about forty-eight hours. A start time agreed the evening before, one long stretch of driving in the morning, a proper stop for lunch, an afternoon that is mostly stopping and looking, and an arrival at the next house with enough daylight left to enjoy it. Your chauffeur is a professional driver rather than a licensed guide, and where a property or a city deserves genuine commentary we will suggest a registered guide meets you there.

Themed tours work well over several days because the car removes the logistics from them. Whisky in Speyside, gardens across Cornwall and Devon, cathedral cities, literary houses, the coastline of Pembrokeshire, or the golf courses of eastern Scotland. Clubs, cases and coats stay in the vehicle between stops, and nothing has to be carried into a hotel that you are leaving in the morning.

Seasons across the British year
May, June and September are the best months to tour: long days, open properties and roads that are busy rather than impossible. July and August bring the school holidays and, in the Highlands, midges and single-track queues. Winter touring is genuinely rewarding in the cities and the cathedral towns, though many rural attractions are shut and the daylight ends by mid-afternoon, which shortens each day considerably.
Book a summer tour a month or more ahead if you can, since the same weeks are busy for hotels and for us. Shorter trips at a fortnight's notice are usually straightforward outside the peak. Half term weeks and the days around Easter fill early in the tourist areas, and a route crossing into Scotland in August needs more notice than the same one in October.

We arrange the car and the chauffeur. Many guests book their own accommodation or use a travel designer, and we will work to whatever itinerary results, advising on realistic driving times between each stay.
In separate accommodation nearby, arranged for the trip and quoted transparently as part of the total. It is never an extra that appears after the fact. Where your hotel has suitable rooms and you would prefer him close by, that can usually be arranged too.
Around one hundred and fifty on main roads, rather less on Highland or Cornish lanes where the driving is slower and far more interesting. Beyond that the day becomes a drive rather than a tour.
Usually yes, and continuity makes the trip noticeably better. Driving-hours rules require proper rest, so we plan lighter days and later starts into the schedule rather than treating them as an inconvenience.
