The A5 through Hinckley is one of the least forgiving roads in the region. It is single carriageway for long stretches, lined with distribution parks, and the queues at the Longshoot and at Dodwells build from mid-afternoon and hold until well past six. Anything time-sensitive we route by the M69 and the A47 instead, even where the mileage looks worse on paper. Northbound on the M1 from junction 21 the same rule applies through the Leicester evening peak.

Motorsport shapes several weekends of the year. Mallory Park lies a few minutes north near Kirkby Mallory and Donington Park is under half an hour up the M1, and on event days the surrounding lanes carry far more traffic than their width suggests. Silverstone is around an hour south, and Grand Prix weekend affects the whole corridor. We plan departures around the published closures and set out earlier than usual, since leaving a circuit is invariably slower than reaching one.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
