The Cat and Fiddle road, the A537 over to Macclesfield, is the one that catches people out. It climbs well past a thousand feet, closes in heavy snow and is regularly among the last routes in the county to reopen, so in winter we plan around it rather than through it and take the A54 or the A6 instead. The Snake Pass on the A57 beyond Glossop behaves much the same way. Neither is a road to meet for the first time on an airport morning.

In summer the pressure shifts to the town itself. Festival weeks in July fill the streets around the Opera House and the Crescent, and Sunday afternoons bring a steady procession down the A6 through Taddington and along the Wye valley. Parking near the Pavilion Gardens is limited at the best of times, so collections are agreed at a set point rather than left to chance, and your chauffeur waits somewhere sensible nearby instead of circling a car park that filled at eleven.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
