The York Street interchange at the southern end is the busiest junction in Northern Ireland and it defines mornings across this area. Traffic joining from the M2, the M3 and the Westlink meets in one place, and delay there propagates north for several miles. Our chauffeurs plan around it as a matter of course: a nine thirty appointment in the city is served by leaving at eight rather than a quarter past, and a northbound return after four is timed to miss the worst.

Away from the motorway the area rewards a slower look. Cave Hill and Belfast Castle sit immediately above, with the finest view over the lough anywhere near the city, and the shore path at Whiteabbey and the loughshore park at Jordanstown make an easy hour. For a longer day, the Antrim Coast Road is reached in half an hour through Carrickfergus, which makes this a surprisingly practical starting point for the Glens and the Causeway.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
