When a championship comes to Royal Portrush the town changes shape for a week. Roads close, shuttle routes appear and hotels for miles around fill, so accommodation is often at Coleraine, Ballymoney or further afield with a car running in each morning. Those days are planned backwards from the tee times and the published closures, using approaches from the Ballymoney side where it helps, and evening collections are set at a fixed spot outside the cordon.

The coast road east is the other reason people come. Dunluce, Bushmills, the Causeway itself, Ballintoy harbour and the rope bridge at Carrick-a-Rede follow one another within half an hour, and the whole stretch fits comfortably into a day with time for lunch. The Causeway visitor centre asks for timed entry in high season. Atlantic squalls arrive with very little warning here, so an alternative order of stops is always held ready.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests.
