Fermanagh is the one part of the province where its famous compactness stops applying. From Enniskillen the north coast is a full day's driving there and back with little left over, and even Belfast is a proper journey rather than a hop. The A4 is the road that matters, and the section between Ballygawley and Dungannon carries most of the traffic. A Belfast flight from here is planned with a good deal more margin than one from anywhere in County Antrim.

Locally, though, everything is close and gentle. A day takes Castle Coole, Florence Court and the Marble Arch caves in the morning, then the lough shore road to Belleek and its pottery in the afternoon, returning by Kesh and Irvinestown. Devenish Island and its round tower are reached by boat from the town. Rain comes in off the Atlantic here more than anywhere else we cover, so itineraries are built with alternatives rather than assumptions.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
