The A3 and the A28 do most of the work here, feeding the M1 at Craigavon and running south-east towards Newry through Markethill and the drumlins. The country lanes between Loughgall, Richhill and Portadown are narrow and hedged, pretty in May when the blossom is out and slow behind farm traffic through the autumn. We route accordingly, and a chauffeur who knows the ground will take the long way round rather than lose ten minutes at a blind junction on a market morning.

A day out of Armagh reaches further than most visitors assume. The Mournes are within about an hour and a half by Newry, the southern shore of Lough Neagh is barely half an hour away, and the Fermanagh lakes at Enniskillen make an unhurried return before dark. Trying to add the north coast to the same day is the one plan we usually talk people out of. Where a schedule looks tight we will say so, and suggest the day that actually works.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
