The end of the M2 at Ballymena is a genuine pinch point: traffic that has been moving freely suddenly meets roundabouts and single carriageway heading north. Add the harvest, or a wet Friday afternoon, and the A26 towards Ballymoney can crawl. East of the town the country changes completely. The A42 climbs past Broughshane, crosses the shoulder of Slemish and drops to Carnlough on the coast, where the A2 takes over. Done in that direction a day can take in the Glens, Cushendun, Ballycastle and the Causeway before returning by Ballymoney, and it makes for a far better outing than the same ground in reverse. In poor visibility we keep low and use the coast road throughout instead.

Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
