The A2 along the lough shore is the road that matters, running through Holywood and Cultra to the Sydenham Bypass and the city. It moves well outside the peaks and thoroughly badly within them, particularly westbound before nine. The Bangor rail line is a genuinely good alternative into Belfast, and we often meet guests at the station rather than fight the traffic in both directions. Sea haar can settle along this shore in early summer without touching the roads inland.

South of the town the Ards Peninsula opens up: Mount Stewart on the shore of Strangford Lough, Greyabbey, and the little ferry from Portaferry to Strangford that turns a dead end into a loop. A full day takes that circuit, crosses the narrows, looks at Castle Ward and returns by Downpatrick and Comber without hurrying anybody. Ferry timings depend on conditions, so a road alternative is planned and mentioned before you set out for the day.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
