Three spires above Georgian streets give Truro an unexpectedly urban air for a place this far west, and it functions as the county's administrative and professional centre, with the courts, the main hospital at Treliske and the best shopping in Cornwall. Visitors come for the cathedral, for the gardens at Trelissick and Trewithen nearby, and because Truro is where a great many Cornish journeys have to begin, being the county's principal railhead.
The city sits in a bowl, which means steep approaches from almost every direction and a centre that is largely pedestrianised. Lemon Quay and the streets around the cathedral are for walking, the multi-storeys fill on Saturdays, and the station approach is narrow with a small forecourt. Treliske sits west of the city on the A390 and generates a steady flow of traffic all day. Country addresses towards the Roseland and the creeks are down long, single-track lanes.
Falmouth is twenty to thirty minutes, St Ives and Newquay both around an hour, and Penzance about an hour on the A30. Bristol Airport is three and a quarter to four hours and London five and a quarter to six and a quarter by road, which is a genuine day's driving. For most guests the sensible arrangement is the main line into Truro with a car at the platform and a driver for the week.

The county railhead and the A30
Truro station carries the through services from London and the sleeper, which makes it the natural handover point between rail and road for the whole of west Cornwall. The forecourt is small and the approach from Station Road is narrow, so we meet at an agreed point nearby rather than adding to the congestion. From here Falmouth, the Roseland, St Agnes and the north coast are all within about half an hour to forty minutes.
The A30 is the county's only trunk road and everything depends on it. The Chiverton and Carland Cross sections and the run over Bodmin Moor are where holiday traffic accumulates, with summer Saturdays the worst by a distance. Events at the Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge and the county's festival weekends add to it. For a flight from Bristol we would leave Truro four to four and a half hours ahead in season.

Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.
Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.

Yes. Truro carries the through services for west Cornwall, and we meet at an agreed point near the station rather than the small forecourt. From there we can go on to Falmouth, the Roseland, the north coast or anywhere in the county.
Three and a quarter to four hours in normal conditions on the A30 and M5. In high summer, and particularly on Saturdays, the A30 across Cornwall adds a great deal, so we set a much earlier departure and quote a range.
We can. Trelissick is around twenty minutes and the Roseland villages between half an hour and forty-five minutes, partly along single-track lanes. The King Harry Ferry is an option and we will advise whether it saves time on the day.
