Having junctions 23 and 24 on either side of town is a genuine advantage, but only if you pick the right one. Northbound runs are cleaner from 23; anything heading south or towards Taunton usually wants 24 and the A38. The stretch between them is one of the busiest sections of the M5 in high summer, and on Saturdays in late July and August the southbound queue towards Taunton can be slow for a long while with nothing at all behind it.

The other local rhythm is the daily movement to and from the construction and energy sites near the coast, which concentrates traffic on the A39 and the Cannington road at fixed times of the morning and afternoon. We time collections to sit either side of that rather than through it. For a flight out of Bristol before eight, leaving here around two hours ahead is comfortable in winter, and we would add to that on a summer weekend when the motorway fills early.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
