The A417 between Cirencester and Gloucester climbs the escarpment, and the section around the Air Balloon has long been the pinch point of the whole route, with a major scheme reshaping it in recent years. Journeys north are therefore best quoted with a range rather than a number, and we check the current arrangement before setting a departure time. The A419 towards Swindon is dual and quick, which usually makes it the better spine for anything heading east.

Summer brings a different pressure. Polo afternoons and the events at Cirencester Park fill the Tetbury Road and the park approaches, the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford in July draws very heavy traffic onto the A417 and the Lechlade roads, and the Fosse Way north to Stow crawls behind coaches on fine weekends. Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
