Three motorway junctions serve the city and each has its own use: 11A and 12 for southbound runs, 11 for anything towards Cheltenham and the north. The A40 Golden Valley corridor and the Over roundabout west of the city are the two places that reliably slow at peak times, and the A417 up Crickley Hill is the constraint on any journey towards Cirencester and the M4. We pick the junction by direction rather than habit.

Local timing has its own quirks. Kingsholm match evenings clog the Kingsholm Road and the Black Dog Way for a good while after the whistle, and the Severn Bore brings crowds down to Minsterworth and the riverside lanes on the largest tides, filling narrow roads with parked cars for an hour either side. For an early Bristol departure we would usually leave Gloucester about two hours ahead, and a little more when the M5 is carrying summer traffic.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
