Junction 31 is the point at which the country changes character. West of it the A30 and A38 are dual for long stretches but they are not motorway, and both carry the entire holiday flow into Devon and Cornwall. On summer Saturdays the queues start early and last for hours, particularly around the A30 at Whiddon Down and the A38 climb over Haldon. Any journey west between late July and the end of August is planned with that assumption built in from the start.

In the city, the Exe crossings and the Alphington and Marsh Barton approaches are where time is lost during peaks, and matchdays at Sandy Park add substantially to the Sowton and junction 30 corridor. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
