The A35 is the spine of south Dorset, and it is single carriageway for most of its length west of here, with slow climbs at Askerswell and long stretches where overtaking is not sensibly available. Behind a lorry between Dorchester and Bridport, half an hour becomes considerably more. Through July and August it carries holiday traffic all week rather than only at weekends, so any westward journey is quoted with that in mind rather than optimistically.

The coast itself is reached down steep, narrow lanes with limited turning space, particularly around Abbotsbury, Osmington and the approaches to Durdle Door and Lulworth, where car parks fill by mid-morning in season.
