The passenger ferry sails from the harbour and the heliport sits on the eastern edge of town, and both run to fixed times with check-in well ahead of departure and a real prospect of weather disruption. West of Penzance the road network becomes genuinely small. The A30 towards Land's End and the A3071 to St Just are narrow in places, and the coastal lanes around Zennor, Porthcurno and Lamorna are single track with steep gradients and few passing places. Sea fog and wind off the Atlantic slow everything further. For a flight from Bristol we would leave here five to five and a half hours ahead in summer, which is honest rather than cautious.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
