Junction 34 serves the north of the city and junction 33 the south, and choosing correctly saves a crossing of the river, which is the thing worth avoiding. Greyhound Bridge and Skerton Bridge carry everything between the two halves of Lancaster, and when either is under work the whole city feels it. The M6 south towards Preston is the pinch point for airport runs, particularly around junctions 31 and 32, and we allow for it as a matter of routine.

The university sits beside the A6 at Bailrigg, and term-time mornings and Friday afternoons put substantial traffic onto that road in both directions. Graduation weeks and the start of term are heavier still. Out east, the road up the Lune valley towards Caton and Kirkby Lonsdale is a fine drive but narrow in places and prone to flooding after sustained rain. We use the M6 for anything with a flight attached and save the valley for unhurried days.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
