The M65 begins near Preston and ends at Colne, and Blackburn sits in the middle of it at junctions 4, 5 and 6. It is a genuinely useful motorway for most of the day, but the approaches at peak hours and the merge onto the M6 at the western end can add a quarter of an hour without warning. Heading south, the decision lies between the M66 through Rawtenstall and the longer M61 line, and we look at both before committing rather than after.

Ewood Park sits on the A666 south of the centre, and a fixture there slows the roads around Bolton Road and the Darwen approach for a good hour and a half either side. Evening kick-offs are the awkward ones. We collect from north of the ground on those nights and route around rather than through. In hard winters the A666 climb over Darwen moor and the roads towards Belmont hold ice long after the town has cleared, so we take the valley route instead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
