The A523 Silk Road takes traffic past the town rather than through it, and joins the A555 Airport Relief Road at Poynton, which is now the sensible airport route from here and from much of east Cheshire. It runs quickly outside the peaks and slowly within them, with the Handforth and Woodford roundabouts the places it gathers. Southbound, the A523 towards Leek is a good road that narrows through the villages, and it is no shortcut in a hurry.

East of the town the A537 climbs the Cat and Fiddle towards Buxton, one of the best-known moorland roads in England and one of the least reliable in winter. Snow, ice and low cloud close or slow it regularly between November and March, and it is exposed for its whole length. We use the A6 through Whaley Bridge or the A54 instead when conditions are poor, and never plan a flight departure over the tops.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
