From late August into the new year the illuminations turn the Promenade into a slow-moving procession every evening, and the effect spreads well inland to Squires Gate, Central Drive and the M55 approach at junction 4. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
