The M65 is the spine of east Lancashire and it behaves well for most of the day, but junction 7 at Accrington and the stretch down towards Blackburn tighten noticeably between half past seven and nine, and again from four. Heading for Manchester, the choice is the M66 through Rawtenstall or the longer swing west to the M61, and on a bad afternoon the second is quicker despite the extra miles. We check before setting off rather than committing at the roundabout.

The alternative is the moor. The A680 over Haslingden and the roads towards Ramsbottom are genuinely pretty and genuinely slow, and in January they can carry standing water, low cloud or ice long after the valley roads have cleared. We use them by daylight and for unhurried journeys, not for a flight with a fixed check-in. Ewood Park is only a few miles west, and a Saturday fixture there pulls traffic across the A679 and the lower M65 junctions for a couple of hours either side.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
