Junction 4 at Hatfield and junction 6 at Welwyn are the two that serve the town, and the tunnel under Hatfield between them is the single most consequential piece of road in the area. When it is closed for maintenance, which happens overnight and at weekends more often than people expect, traffic is pushed onto the A1000 through Hatfield and Welwyn and the delay is substantial. Locally, the A414 east towards Hertford and west to St Albans is the cross-county link and slows through the Stanborough and Cole Green sections at peak times.
