Two Stevenages sit side by side. The Old Town High Street keeps coaching inns and a market that has been held for centuries, while the post-war town below it was built around a pedestrian centre, cycleways and a ring of neighbourhoods. Business travel dominates: engineering and life sciences visitors, directors moving between sites on the A1(M) corridor, and international guests arriving through Heathrow or Stansted for meetings that were arranged months in advance.
The town centre is deliberately closed to traffic, so kerbside collection there is not an option and we arrange a point on Danestrete or one of the roads off the ring instead. The station sits beside the centre with a busy interchange and a drop-off area that queues at commuter hours; guests are met a short walk away where the car can wait properly. Out in the residential neighbourhoods and the business parks at Gunnels Wood, access is straightforward and space is not a problem.
Luton is generally twenty-five to forty-five minutes across the A602 and A505 or by the A1(M) and M1. Stansted takes an hour to an hour and twenty-five by the A120, and London fifty minutes to an hour and twenty-five on the A1(M), with the section from junction 4 southward being the part that decides it. Cambridge is forty to fifty-five minutes north, and Knebworth is barely ten.

Junction 7 and concert nights
The A1(M) is the town's spine, with junction 7 at the southern end and junction 8 to the north. Southbound queues start early towards Hatfield and the Hertfordshire tunnels around junction 4, and the evening northbound return builds from four. When the motorway is closed or heavily delayed, the B197 old Great North Road through Knebworth and Woolmer Green is the parallel route, slower but reliable, and the A602 links east towards Ware and Hertford.
Concert and event nights at Knebworth are the local exception that catches out anyone unfamiliar with the area. The A1(M) around junction 7 and the roads through Knebworth village fill for hours before and after, and departures afterwards are best planned from a collection point set well away from the main exit. Gunnels Wood Road, serving the industrial and technology estate, is also dense at the start and end of a working day.

We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.
Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it.
