The A421 has transformed how Bedford connects: dual carriageway now runs east to the A1 at Black Cat and west to the M1 at Junction 13, which makes both the Midlands and Cambridge far more predictable than they once were. The pinch remains inside the town, where traffic funnels over the river at Town Bridge and the Prebend Street bridge. Anyone travelling on a school morning should assume the crossings add ten or fifteen minutes to what looks like a short hop.

Luton Airport is the natural departure point, generally half an hour to three quarters down the A6 through Barton-le-Clay or via the M1.
