The A47 from Norwich is the main artery and much of it is single carriageway, so a single slow vehicle or a farm movement changes the timing for everybody. The Acle Straight across the marshes is the stretch people underestimate: it is exposed, prone to fog and mist off the water, and has no overtaking to speak of. We allow for that rather than quoting a best-case run, particularly for anyone connecting to a flight or a train at the other end.

In the town, the Haven Bridge and the Breydon Bridge carry everything across the Yare, and when one is congested the other absorbs it slowly. Summer weekends and school holidays fill the seafront and the A149 towards Caister and Hemsby from late morning. Race meetings at the Great Yarmouth course and the Wellesley add local traffic on their fixture days, and offshore crew changes at the outer harbour tend to cluster at particular hours.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
