The A5 is Watling Street and it still runs dead straight through the town, which is elegant in principle and congested in practice around the junctions with the A505 and A5183. The busway and the reworked A5 to M1 link have improved matters, but the stretch through Houghton Regis remains slow at both ends of the day. For a southbound run we generally take the M1 rather than the A5 through Markyate unless there is a reason not to.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
