The Kingskerswell section of the A380 is the gateway to Torbay and it is where journeys in and out most often slow, particularly on summer Saturdays and at the end of conference days. Within the town, the seafront road between the harbour and Torre Abbey carries almost everything, and any event on the green or the Pavilion forecourt pushes traffic up onto the residential hill roads, which are narrow and not designed for volume.

Hillside addresses need thinking about in advance. Drives off Warberry Road, Lincombe Drive and the Babbacombe roads are steep with tight entrances and very little turning space, and in wet weather the gradients matter. We look at the approach before the day rather than discovering it with a boot full of luggage. For a first flight from Bristol we would leave Torquay around two and three quarter hours ahead, and more in high season.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
