The borough gathers Grays, Tilbury, Chafford Hundred, Purfleet, South Ockendon and Stanford-le-Hope, and it carries the shopping crowds at Lakeside, the deep-water port at London Gateway and the cruise terminal at Tilbury. Our passengers here are cruise guests with luggage and a sailing time, port and logistics executives, and residents travelling into London or out to the airports. It is a place where being late has consequences, so we plan against the crossing rather than around it.
Access is generally easy, since the road network was built for volume rather than charm, but the specific points matter. The Tilbury cruise terminal has its own approach and set-down arrangements, Lakeside is a matter of knowing which entrance serves your side of the centre, and Grays town centre has restricted waiting. Chafford Hundred Lakeside station is convenient for both, and we meet guests at an agreed point beside it rather than in the drop-off loop.
London City is usually thirty to fifty minutes by the A13, and Stansted fifty minutes to an hour and twenty-five up the M25 and M11. Gatwick lies the other way through the Dartford Crossing, ordinarily an hour to an hour and fifty and entirely dependent on the tunnels. Central London is forty-five minutes to an hour and twenty on the A13, and Southend around forty minutes east.

The Dartford Crossing and cruise days
Junctions 30 and 31 of the M25 sit either side of the Dartford Crossing, and everything in Thurrock is measured against it. Northbound the tunnels are the constraint, with height and load restrictions and a hard stop whenever an incident occurs; southbound the QEII bridge flows better but closes in high winds. Queues on the approach can add half an hour or considerably more, and they are worst in the late afternoon and on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Cruise days at Tilbury put a great deal of luggage and a fixed deadline on the same roads, and the A1089 dock approach is the only real way in. We build in time for that rather than assuming the drive. Lakeside is the other seasonal factor: the run-up to Christmas and the sale weekends fill junction 31 and the surrounding roundabouts for much of the day, and an airport departure through that is best timed for the early morning.

We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.
Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
