The Sandbanks road and the Shell Bay chain ferry are the two things that most often decide how long a Poole journey takes. On a warm Saturday the ferry queue can stretch back along the peninsula for a considerable time, and the ferry itself pauses for weather and annual maintenance. Going via Wareham and Corfe adds distance but is frequently quicker and always more predictable, so we choose between them on the day rather than in advance.

The port has its own timetable. Ferry check-in for Channel Islands and cross-Channel sailings closes well before departure and the approach along the A350 and West Quay Road builds beforehand, particularly at the start of school holidays. Within town, the Twin Sails and lifting bridges open on schedule and briefly stop traffic on both sides. For an early Southampton flight we would leave Poole about two and a half hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
