Norwich runs on its ring road, and the outer ring in particular takes the strain of everything the city does. The Thickthorn interchange, where the A11 meets the A47, is the busiest point and queues at both peaks and heavily on Friday afternoons. The northern distributor route has eased the run towards the Broads and the north considerably. Within the centre, Prince of Wales Road and the Castle Meadow area are the two places where a car can be held far longer than the distance warrants.

Southbound the A11 is dual carriageway nearly all the way to the M11, which makes the airport run dependable outside holiday weekends. The stretch past Thetford and Elveden is where slow farm traffic and speed enforcement both feature, and the Barton Mills roundabout onto the A14 sees seasonal queues. East and west the A47 is single carriageway in long sections, which is why Great Yarmouth, Dereham and King's Lynn are quoted generously rather than by distance alone.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does.
