Junctions 39, 40 and 41 of the M1 serve the city, and Lofthouse, where the M62 crosses just to the north, is the point that decides most journeys. It queues in both peaks and any incident there sends traffic onto the A61 and A650 within minutes. The A638 towards Dewsbury and the A61 to Leeds are the usual alternatives, and the outer ring road runs faster than it looks outside the school run.

The sculpture park lies off Junction 38 near West Bretton, and on a fine weekend the approach lanes and car parks fill by late morning, so we drop at the visitor entrance and collect from an agreed point afterwards. The shopping centres empty at once at closing time, and fixtures at Belle Vue add local traffic for an hour. The Pennine crossing on the M62 remains the long-range variable, particularly for winter flights from Manchester.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
