The pond, the green and Church Road give the place the feel of a small country town that happens to be four miles from Hyde Park Corner. Barn Elms and the wetlands fill the western edge, Castelnau runs arrow-straight north between its stucco villas, and the terraces off White Hart Lane are considerably tighter. Those we drive here tend to be families running between the independent schools nearby, rowing households, and residents flying long-haul with an unforgiving start time.
Water is the complication. The Thames wraps three sides of Barnes, so every departure begins with a decision about which crossing to take, and Hammersmith Bridge has spent long stretches of recent years closed to motor traffic. We plan routes that do not depend on it, going out over Chiswick Bridge or Putney Bridge instead. The High Street and Church Road are slim, with cars parked both sides; your chauffeur sets down at the door and then waits in a bay rather than holding up a lane.
For Heathrow allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes, out along the South Circular to Chiswick Bridge and then the A4 or M4, with the Chiswick roundabout the part most likely to cost you time. Central London runs 35 to 55 minutes by way of Putney Bridge or Hammersmith. Gatwick is a longer proposition at 70 to 100 minutes. Bridges, tides and race days
The Championship Course from Putney to Mortlake runs along the whole northern edge of Barnes, and on the big race weekends The Terrace, Lonsdale Road and the approaches to Barnes Bridge are closed or crawling from mid-morning onwards. On those days we collect from the far side of Rocks Lane or from Castelnau and let you walk the last stretch, which is genuinely quicker than any car can manage. The Wetland Centre car park fills early in fine weather and is never a dependable place to wait.
Castelnau is the natural artery north, yet it feeds straight into the Hammersmith Bridge approach, so when the bridge is shut to vehicles the queue that gathers there is going nowhere useful. Rocks Lane down to the Upper Richmond Road, then west towards Chiswick Bridge, is the reliable way out at almost any hour. School mornings around Church Road and Nassau Road are the tightest twenty minutes of the Barnes day, and we build a margin into the timings for them.

Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.
Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season.
