Hammersmith is a transport junction with a riverside village attached. The Broadway gyratory and the flyover carry an enormous volume of traffic; a few hundred metres south, Lower Mall and Upper Mall run quietly along the Thames past boathouses and old riverside pubs. King Street holds the shopping, and the theatre on Queen Caroline Street brings several thousand people to the area on a concert night. The gyratory is the thing to understand: one way, multi-lane and easy to get wrong, with the flyover carrying the A4 above it. Stopping is possible on neither. We set down on Queen Caroline Street, Butterwick or the quieter turnings off King Street instead. Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to motor traffic in recent years, so river crossings go via Putney or Chiswick and we confirm the current position before the day. Hammersmith sits outside the congestion charge zone.
Concerts are the most predictable pattern here — a set-down before doors and a collection afterwards from a point away from the venue, since the streets around it fill instantly. Riverside lunches along the Mall are the other local draw, particularly in summer and around the boat race, which closes the towpath and much of the surrounding area for a day. Business travel to the offices along the Great West Road makes up much of the rest.
This is a fast address for the west. Heathrow is typically 25 to 45 minutes straight down the A4 and M4, which is why so many of our airport runs begin here. Central London is 20 to 40 minutes in the other direction. Gatwick is the harder journey at 60 to 100 minutes. For Windsor, Ascot, Oxford and the Cotswolds, the M4 and M40 are both reached within minutes of leaving the door.

Approaches, riverside and crossings
South of the Broadway, Fulham Palace Road runs down towards the hospital and on into SW6, and it carries more traffic than its width suggests at almost every hour. Crisp Road and the turnings towards Furnivall Gardens give quieter access to the riverside than the Mall itself. Brook Green, north-east of the flyover between Shepherd's Bush Road and Hammersmith Road, is residential and calm, and a car can generally wait there without any difficulty at all.
River crossings are the recurring question here. With the bridge unavailable to vehicles in recent years, southbound journeys go by Putney or Chiswick, and the two behave very differently: Putney backs up along the Lower Richmond Road, while Chiswick adds distance but usually keeps moving. The riverside roads west of the bridge sit low, and a high spring tide can put water across them, which is worth knowing before a winter evening beside the Thames.
Hammersmith runs to two clocks. The commercial hours belong to the Broadway, the bus station and King Street, where deliveries and school traffic make the middle of the morning slower than the peak itself. The evenings belong to the river and the venues, and the area empties in a rush rather than a trickle. Late at night the A4 is one of the fastest roads in west London, which is why so many airport runs from here start before dawn.

Performance nights are the clearest pattern in Hammersmith. Hammersmith's traffic is unusually predictable, which helps. The Broadway is slow from mid-morning until well after the evening peak; the A4 westbound runs freely late at night and very early. For a morning flight we generally suggest leaving before the school run rather than trying to beat it, and we will say plainly when a requested time looks optimistic.
Availability follows the venue calendar more than the season. Nights with a major performance, regatta weekends and the run-up to the summer holidays fill first, and larger vehicles go earliest because groups book them.
