The bridge dictates the shape of a Putney morning. Northbound between eight and half nine it is slow and the queue reaches back past the station, so for anything heading west we go out along the Upper Richmond Road and cross further upstream instead. Southbound in the evening the same holds in reverse. When the bridge is closed for works the alternatives are Wandsworth Bridge to the east or Hammersmith to the west, and both add genuine time.

The Embankment is closed or impassable on the big regatta and race days, when the whole stretch from the bridge down to Leaders Gardens belongs to crews and spectators.
