Everything in Chiswick is timed around the Hogarth Roundabout. Westbound in the morning it flows; eastbound between four and six it does not, and the queue reaches back past Sutton Court Road. When the A4 is solid we drop to Burlington Lane and Great Chertsey Road for Chiswick Bridge, or run further west along the Great West Road. Chiswick Mall floods on the highest spring tides, which is a regular event rather than folklore, and the road closes with water lying across it.

For a set-down at Strand-on-the-Green the lane is far too narrow to turn a long car, so we come in from Thames Road and stop at the top instead of descending towards the towpath. Turnham Green Terrace carries loading restrictions through the day and makes a poor waiting place.
