Hanwell Broadway is where the delay lives. The junction of the Uxbridge Road with Boston Road and Greenford Avenue backs up in both directions between eight and half nine, then again from four. For an early flight we go down Boston Road before the Broadway wakes and join the M4 at Boston Manor with the town still asleep. Later in the day the run through Southall to the A312 is frequently better, even though it looks like the longer way round on a map.

Three Bridges, where road, rail and canal stack one above another, is a curiosity rather than an obstacle, though the lanes around it are single width and awkward to reverse out of. The hospital site keeps its own access arrangements and the barriers there are no place to wait. For a wedding at St Mary's or St Mellitus we set down on the church side and hold the car well back, so no photograph is ever taken over a bonnet.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
