Sheen Lane crossing closes repeatedly through the morning and evening peaks, and a car caught on the wrong side can lose ten minutes without moving an inch. For an early airport run we take the northern side of the railway from the outset, joining Mortlake Road and turning for Chiswick Bridge. Later in the day, once the trains thin, the crossing is barely an inconvenience and the direct route through the village becomes much the pleasanter of the two.

The Boat Race finishes just short of Chiswick Bridge, and on that weekend the High Street, Thames Bank and the bridge approaches are closed or heaving from late morning until well after the crews are ashore. We collect from the Upper Richmond Road side instead and keep clear of the towpath end altogether. Redevelopment of the old brewery brings construction traffic through the High Street on weekday mornings, another reason we favour the northern approach before nine.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
