The M62 across the Pennines is the highest motorway in England, and the weather on it is an operational matter rather than a talking point. Between junctions 21 and 22 it is exposed to wind, freezing fog and snow, and restrictions or closures occur most winters. Westbound in the morning the approach to Simister Island at junction 18 is the routine delay, and that junction affects almost every Rochdale journey heading for the airport.

Locally, the difficulty is the valley. The A58 and A671 up to Littleborough and towards Bacup climb steadily and narrow through the villages, and the roads around Hollingworth Lake fill on any fine weekend afternoon. Blackstone Edge is often closed when the M62 itself is struggling, so it is rarely the alternative people hope for. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
