Junction thirteen of the M4 at Chieveley is where the A34 crosses, and it governs almost every timing here. Trunk road traffic queues on the roundabout through both peaks, and any incident on the A34 towards Oxford pushes vehicles straight back into the town along the A4. When the junction is blocked we run west on the A4 to junction fourteen at Membury instead, which costs a few miles and generally saves rather more time than it spends.

Race days at Newbury reshape the local roads for an afternoon and an evening, with the A339 and the Greenham road busy in both directions and the exit slow for an hour after the last. Market mornings fill the Market Place and the Wharf, and December brings closures around Northbrook Street. Highclere is roughly twenty minutes south when the A34 is clear, though the approach lane is single track and summer visitor traffic there is considerable.

Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
