Junctions nine and ten of the M40 bracket the town, and junction nine at the A34 is the one that misbehaves, particularly on Friday afternoons when Oxford, Bicester and the motorway all want the same roundabout. The A41 through the middle of Bicester is slow in both peaks and worse when the outlet is busy, so for airport runs we often use the B4030 and Wendlebury rather than the town centre. Southbound the M40 through the Chilterns is the section that decides a Heathrow timing.

The outlet village generates the sort of traffic more usually associated with a stadium, with coach movements, shuttle buses and full car parks from late morning at weekends. Sale periods and the run up to Christmas are the heaviest. At the old airfield, the classic car gatherings bring several thousand visitors on a Sunday and the approach lanes queue accordingly. Out in the villages towards Weston-on-the-Green and Stoke Lyne the roads are narrow and unlit, and a gate landmark helps.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
