The Thanet Way is the only sensible spine in and out, and it is a mixed road: dual for most of its length but with junctions that queue badly at Whitstable and around the Brenley Corner interchange where it meets the M2 and the A2. Friday afternoons in summer are the worst of it, and the return on a Sunday evening backs up from Faversham. When the A299 is blocked the alternative through Canterbury on the A28 is slow, so we usually build a margin rather than a diversion.

In the town itself, seafront parking is effectively gone by mid-morning on any warm day, and the harbour arm closes to vehicles during events. Turner Contemporary openings and the summer festivals bring temporary closures around the Rendezvous and Marine Drive. For an early flight from any London airport we would generally suggest leaving Margate about four hours ahead, and rather more if the Dartford crossing forms part of the route that morning.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
