Junction 5 gives Loughton an advantage most of north-east London would envy, but it is a partial junction and traffic funnels along the A121 Epping New Road to reach it. Mornings between seven and nine are dense in that direction, and the M11 southbound towards the A406 can be slow well into mid-morning. Northbound for Stansted is usually kinder. Where the M11 is troublesome we come round to the M25 at junction 26 near Waltham Abbey and join the motorway network there instead.

Epping Forest shapes the alternative routes. The A104 and A121 through the forest are pleasant and often quicker than the main road, but they are unlit in stretches, popular with cyclists at weekends and slow when deer are about at dawn and dusk. On fine Sundays the car parks along the forest roads fill and passing space narrows. Your chauffeur knows which of these lanes are worth taking at which hour, and which are best left to the walkers.
