Junction ten of the M25 where it meets the A3 at Wisley is the local bottleneck, and it has been under long term change, so the approach is not always what a map remembers. Northbound queues build from around seven and southbound from four. In town, the Ladymead and Stoke Road stretch of the A25 carries most of the through traffic and the ring road slows at the same hours. We use the A320 through Woking when the A3 is blocked.

The Surrey Research Park and the university sit on the hill west of town with their own internal roads and barriered entrances, and finding a specific building there is considerably harder than finding the site, so we ask for the building name. Out east, Wisley and the villages along the A25 towards Shere and Gomshall are narrow, pretty and slow on a summer Sunday.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
