The Dartford Crossing is the largest single variable in any journey from Gravesend heading north or west. The northbound tunnels and the southbound bridge both queue unpredictably, and an incident there can add half an hour or more without warning. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
